In 2022, De Oude Fabreeck proudly hosted the very first Bedford Half Marathon—a vibrant and spirited event that brought our small Eastern Cape town to life. Despite its modest beginnings, the marathon was warmly supported by locals and participants from neighbouring towns, creating an unforgettable atmosphere of community and celebration.

The event featured a challenging yet scenic 21km route, with participants given the option to tackle it solo or in relay teams of two. For those seeking a more relaxed pace, we introduced an 8km fun run/walk, perfect for all ages and fitness levels.

Adding a unique local touch, our generous citrus farmers provided their brightly coloured people-carrier trucks, usually seen during harvest, to transport participants to the starting point. The festive spirit was palpable, with runners and walkers dressing in colourful attire, bringing even more cheer to the day.

A standout moment of the event was the lively watering point, where the brave and thirsty could quench their thirst with draught beers. This station, managed by the energetic Adelaide Round Table, became a highlight of the day, combining refreshment with camaraderie.

The success and enthusiasm of our first Half Marathon laid the foundation for its continuation in 2023 and beyond. It remains a testament to the power of community and the joy of coming together for a shared purpose.
